"Let's Do Some Engineering" SWE Event with the YMCA Summer Camp
Friday, July 14th, from 12:00pm to 3:00pm
Oak Grove/Bellemeade Elementary, 2200 Ingram St, Richmond, VA 23224

SWE Richmond is partnering with the YMCA for an engineering outreach event with their summer camp program. Volunteers are needed to facilitate two hands-on engineering activities for Grade 4 campers.

In the "Ship the Chip" activity, students will use household materials to pack a Pringle into a box, then simulate shipping it via a drop test. The team with the most intact chip and the lightest packaging is declared the winner.

In the pollution activity, students will learn a core sampling method to detect a colored drink mix seeping through sand and locate the pollution point source.

End of Year Picnic - Saturday, June 10

SWE Richmond welcomes any collegiates who will be in the area, as well as women engineers and their families, to join us for our summer picnic.

We will meet at Maymont for a picnic. Families are welcome! SWE will provide sandwich fixings and cupcakes from Sally Bell's. Members are welcome to bring a dish to share (only if you want to).

Hiking - Sunday, April 30, 2017

*DATE CHANGED due to hike leader's work travel schedule. Join us Sunday instead of Saturday.*

Join us for a hike of about 5 miles in the James River Park system. We'll hike on the trails along the river then go to lunch afterward. Wear hiking shoes or good tennis shoes, and bring water. Don't forget to eat breakfast.

We'll park at the Reedy Creek trailhead near the James River Park headquarters building. The approximate address for the parking lot is 4001 Riverside Drive, Richmond, VA 23225, but please review the map to ensure you find the right parking lot. The entrance is directly across from Hillcrest Road, just east of where 42nd Street intersects Riverside Drive.


Professional Development Speaker - May 17, 2017

SWE-RVA will partner with Capital One for a professional development event. See below for RSVP information.

The event will begin with a talk by Julie Elberfeld, Senior Vice President and Commercial Bank CIO. She will discuss her career, lessons learned, and best practices. A short Q&A will follow.

Then the Capital One HR team will lead a workshop on design thinking and career development, for participants to reflect on their own careers. Networking will close out the event.

Refreshments will be provided. Parking is available near the building.

Judges needed for Technology Student Association competition

The Technology Student Association (TSA) offers many leadership and competitive opportunities to middle school and high school students. We are in need of more than 100 judges and volunteers from the Richmond area. Cider Tasting and Science Talk at Blue Bee Cider - March 28, 2017

We will meet at Blue Bee Cider to taste local cider and hear an overview of the cider-making process from owner Courtney Mailer. Blue Bee is Virginia's first urban cidery, and they recently moved into the historic Richmond Stables building in Scott's Addition. The tasting may include their regular lineup and any small-batch ciders they're pouring. They also have snacks available for purchase.

Women in Engineering Panel with SWE-VCU

SWE Richmond will be putting together a panel for SWE VCU to discuss our experiences as women in engineering. We still need additional panel members, and all SWE Richmond members are invited to join us. SWE VCU will be inviting all women students at the VCU School of Engineering, and we usually have about 40 collegiates in attendance. Networking will follow the panel. Sandwiches will be served.

Hidden Figures movie and discussion - January 14, 2017
