SWE Day with First Robotics - February 10th

posted Jan 13, 2018, 12:37 PM by Society of Women Engineers RVA

When: February 10th from 1-3pm
Where: Powertrain Control Solutions, Ashland VA

The Richmond-SWE Section will be visiting the Deep Run High School's First Robotics Team to see the robot that they are building. We will be providing feedback on electrical design, coding, mechanical design, etc. It is also a great opportunity for the students to have female engineering mentors and role models and to see engineering professionals in action.

The students have 6 weeks to design and build their competition robot before bagging it. They will continue working on their secondary duplicate robot. This year the theme of the competition is 8 bit video games!  The manual for the competition can be found in the attached file below.

Let's Do Some Engineering at the YMCA - February 22, 2018

posted Dec 29, 2017, 1:37 PM by Society of Women Engineers RVA

SWE Richmond is partnering with the YMCA for an engineering outreach activity in their after-school program. Volunteers are needed to work with middle school students on two hands-on engineering activities.

In the "Ship the Chip" activity, students will use household materials to pack a Pringle into a box, then simulate shipping it via a drop test. The team with the most intact chip and the lightest packaging is declared the winner.

In the "Pollution Patrol" activity, students will locate the source of an environmental pollutant by systematically testing soil-water samples.

SWE-RVA is participating in Sonya Kovalevsky Day, hosted by the VCU chapter of the Association of Women in Math.  Sonya Kovalevsky (born Sofia Kovalevskaya) was a Russian mathematician who faced obstacles in her education but went on to make important contributions to mathematics.

Sonya Kovalevsky Day is an outreach event to encourage middle school girls to study math.  VCU's chapter of AWM is organizing SK Day at the Math Science Innovation Center.  There will be a keynote speaker and hands-on workshops.  SWE-RVA will be leading a hands-on engineering activity - What Floats your Boat? for students to explore the concepts of buoyancy, density, and gravity.

We can use volunteers for our workshop.  Email swe.richmond@gmail.com for more information.

WestRock Plant Tour - November 8th at 6pm

posted Oct 12, 2017, 12:11 PM by Society of Women Engineers RVA   [ updated Oct 27, 2017, 6:09 PM ]

Our November event will be a tour of the WestRock facility located at 5710 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, VA 23231.  Please RSVP to Genna at swe.richmond@gmail.com if you can make it!

WestRock operates a 317,000-square-foot plant on South Laburnum Avenue that makes pizza boxes for three of the largest pizza companies in the nation.  Every day, the factory churns out about 1.5 million boxes — or what WestRock, like other packaging manufacturers, prefers to call corrugated containers.  The plant makes containers not just for pizza, but for other consumer goods and e-commerce packaging.  Click here to learn more about the WestRock plant.

This tour will take you through the process of assembling, forming, and printing boxes. So all the goods delivered to you, from food delivery to your next online purchase will make it to you protected and look fantastic doing it. The plant process starts with rolls of paper coming in and ends with packages going to the customer to fill at their site. We will see the processes in between.

Please see the attached document below for directions to the West Rock Plant.

T-Shirt Design Contest - Deadline October 27

posted Oct 9, 2017, 6:20 PM by Society of Women Engineers RVA

The Richmond SWE section is designing t-shirts for outreach events/marketing and we need your ideas!

General guidelines:
The shirts will be dark grey ladies cut tees with yellow, purple and/or white printing.
The design should incorporate the SWE logo (see guidelines below) and a Richmond themed detail or graphic (ideally loosely engineering related). This could be anything from the outline of a city landmark to simply spelling out Richmond. The options are endless! Your design could be limited to the front of the shirt or have printing on both sides - just be sure to keep it professional. The t-shirt printing company will finalize the graphic design, so don't worry if your ideas are just sketched out in pencil. They can take care of the rest.

Keep in mind that SWE has branding requirements if involving the logo.  Please make sure that your design incorporates these rules appropriately. Please see guidelines here.

Email your designs to swe.richmond@gmail.com. There is no limit to the number of individual submissions. Be creative - no idea is too small! The deadline for the contest is October 27. The shirts should be available for purchase by December. The winner of the contest will get their T-Shirt for FREE!
