The slate will be announced at our May meeting and elections will be conducted in late May, with new officers announced before the June meeting.

Full STEAM Ahead Workshop - July 19, 2018

The Richmond SWE Section is hosting a workshop called, Shedding Light on Electric Circuits at the Full STEAM Ahead Conference on July 19th.  The students will use an electric circuit computer simulation as a way to experience what engineers do.

Date: Thursday July 19th
Time: 10:50-11:50am, volunteers please arrive 20 minutes before our scheduled workshop.
Location: Chesterfield CTE Center on Hull Street

Hiking - May 19, 2018

We will be hiking on Saturday, May 19, 2018. We will meet at the Texas Beach parking lot and hike on the North Bank Trail out to Brown's Island, where we can check out some Riverrock events like kayak races, bike tricks, bouldering, or air dogs (dock jumping). Then we'll double back to Texas Beach. The hike will be about 4 miles, so about 2 hours of walking plus time at Riverrock.

Directions: take Meadow Street south until it ends. Turn left on Kansas Avenue, then right on Texas Avenue. Texas Avenue dead-ends into a small parking lot. This is where we will meet. For GPS directions, you can use the nearby address 1912 Texas Avenue, Richmond, VA 23220. The only facility at the trailhead is a portapotty.

Brewery Tour- April 18th

Join us for a tour of Hardywood Brewery at their Westcreek Facility! This will be a specialized tour to understand the science and engineering behind the brewing process.

Regional TSA Competition - March 3

There is a regional TSA competition hosted by the Technology Student Association at Deep Run High School on March 3rd. They are looking for volunteers to judge the competition.

Engineering Night - April 11th

Bellwood Elementary School is hosting a Kindergarten Engineering Night for their students. There will be multiple stations with engineering and STEM activities. SWE is hosting a table with an engineering activity.  Stations will be 20 minutes long with 5-7 children at each round. The theme of the event is fairy tales! Pizza will be provided for dinner.

Girls in Science - March 24th

Middle School girls join forces with professional women to learn all about inventors and innovation in this overnight adventure. Students will discover how to work through the design process, explore engineering concepts in hands-on workshops, get inspired by a guest speaker, and watch Dream Big in the Dome. 

SWE-Richmond will be volunteering with DuPont and the Science Museum of Virginia to help out at the event.

Engineer's Week Networking Breakfast - February 22nd

SWE Day with First Robotics - February 10th

When: February 10th from 1-3pm
Where: Powertrain Control Solutions, Ashland VA

The Richmond-SWE Section will be visiting the Deep Run High School's First Robotics Team to see the robot that they are building. We will be providing feedback on electrical design, coding, mechanical design, etc. It is also a great opportunity for the students to have female engineering mentors and role models and to see engineering professionals in action.

The students have 6 weeks to design and build their competition robot before bagging it. They will continue working on their secondary duplicate robot. This year the theme of the competition is 8 bit video games!  The manual for the competition can be found in the attached file below.
