Sonya Kovalevsky Day - December 3, 2016

posted Oct 16, 2016, 9:02 AM by Society of Women Engineers RVA   [ updated Oct 16, 2016, 9:04 AM ]
SWE-RVA will be presenting an engineering workshop to middle school girls at Sonya Kovalevsky Day. Our outreach chair Carol has selected a new activity called Ship the Chip, where students design packaging to protect a Pringle in rough handling. The lesson plan is at http://tryengineering.org/lessons/shipthechip.pdf and Carol is designing a worksheet to show how math is needed to evaluate solutions to this engineering problem.

We need volunteers to help the girls during our workshop. Email swe.richmond@gmail.com for more information or to volunteer.

Sonya Kovalevsky Day is hosted by the VCU chapter of the Association of Women in Math. Sonya Kovalevsky (born Sofia Kovalevskaya) was a Russian mathematician who faced obstacles in her education but went on to make important contributions to mathematics.

Sonya Kovalevsky Day is an outreach event to encourage middle school girls to study math. VCU's chapter of AWM is organizing SK Day at the Math-Science Innovation Center. There will be a keynote speaker and several hands-on workshops, including our Ship the Chip activity.
